Every year the British Museum recruits a Youth Collective to work with us, which forms a core part of the Young People's programme.

The Youth Collective is a group of 18–24-year-olds from a variety of backgrounds, who meet weekly to learn about the British Museum and work on co-producing events aimed at other young people to inspire them to engage with the Museum.

Through events, workshops and creative online content, the Youth Collective aims to spark conversations and influence change at the Museum by feeding back constructive criticism.

Recruitment for the 2024 Youth Collective has now concluded. Please check back next year to find out how to apply for the 2025 Youth Collective.

Watch 'Unlocking the Museum' events

If you're a young person interested in getting a job in a museum, or want to know how museums can work with young people; then join the Youth Collective and watch Unlocking the Museum - a series of videos exploring careers and opportunities in the museum sector.

2023 programme

The 2023 Youth Collective continued running their events in-person. Their first event All you need is love aimed to show some of the different forms love takes in objects around the Museum. The Mid-Autumn Festival, held in connection with the China's hidden century exhibition, was one of the Museum's largest and most successful events. Their final event, Carve out your career, aimed to empower young people starting their career journey.

2022 programme

The 2022 Youth Collective built on the work of the previous Youth Collectives. Their events, held after COVID-19 restrictions had lifted, were the first to be entirely in-person. Throughout their time they worked on three events including: Celebrating Pride, a collaborative event with colleagues in our Learning department as part of the celebrations for Pride; Careers outside Curation, highlighting some of the many other museum careers beyond curation; and (No) sex please, we're the British Museum which aimed to remind people that sex shouldn't be a taboo topic and that people have been talking about and having sex for thousands of years.

2021 programme

Continuing in the spirit of greater change, the 2021 Youth Collective was inspired to look at the topic of 'Black Joy'. They reflected that often stories of Black people are framed largely around slavery and oppression and were keen to show that there are stories of joy to tell as well. The collective also ran an online event as part of the Nero: the man behind the myth exhibition that looked at his life, as well as an event on careers and networking.

2020 programme

In response to the coronavirus pandemic and the wider changes happening in the world, the 2020 Youth Collective created a three-day series of events on the topic of 'change'. Reflecting on wider societal change, change at the Museum and personal changes, each day the different activities reflected on one of these.
