Frederick DuCane Godman
The Godman Circle is named after Frederick DuCane Godman and his daughter Edith, for the extraordinary collection of some 600 ceramics, from medieval Iran and the Ottoman world, along with Hispano-Moresque pottery from Spain which the Museum received by bequest from Edith Godman in 1983.
This collection had been put together by one of the great collectors of Islamic art – Edith's father Frederick DuCane Godman (1834–1919). Frederick was an ornithologist and Trustee of the British Museum, well known for his pioneering work of 63 volumes Biologia Centrali Americana – a survey of flora and fauna of Mexico and Central America.
